I have been diagnosed weith dysthymia and am currently on effexor xr 225 mg. per day but it doesn t seem to be holding me as it did several months ago. General & Family Physician 's  Response
Hi,

Fluoxetine or mirtazapine or trazodone can be effective alternative. Antidepressants like selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors or tricyclic antidepressants or serotonin and norepinephrine reuptake inhibitors are commonly prescribed for the treatment of this persistent depressive disorder. Along with psychotherapy I would suggest fluoxetine or mirtazapine or trazodone as effective replacement for the treatment of dysthymia which is not responding to Effexor-XR.

Hope I have answered your question. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Regards,
Dr. Mohammed Taher Ali, General & Family Physician
