Suffer From Heart Disease And COPD. Reduced Functioning Of Heart. Difibilator Advised. Survival Chances?

i am a 48 yr old female & i found out i have heart disease & copd. my heart is now functioning at only 15%-18%. last year the drs. suggested putting in a difibulator but i havent had it done yet. i am a single mother with 2 children. my question is how long does someone with this percentage of heart function live & how much longer does a difibulater add to someones life on the average?

HI,
Heart diseases are the most difficult group to predict outcome.I presume the the low function of the heart at your age is due to cardiomyopathy(possibly DCM).There is no definite prognostic guidelines regarding how long a person with a certain amount of heart function can live. Its different for each individual.A person with heart function of 40% can be lost in one hour and a patient with a heart function of 15% can live for long without any complication.
Such a low functioning heart as yours is very prone to arrythmias, which in turn can result in sudden death. This is where defibrillators come into the picture. They are life saving at such a moment. They can revert the arrythmia to normal rhythm even without your knowledge and hence evert possible disaster.I would advice you to go ahead with the defibrillator if that is what has been adviced.
Lastly, everyone has their shortcomings and your health is one of it.Do all that can be done from your side and human side.Take regular medication and follow doctors advise.Remember You are still a caring mother to 2 children.Dont lose hope and dont be desperate.Take life as it comes.
Hope and pray that you have a trouble free long life.

Hi there ~

I understand your concern and would like to reassure you that you will get better and can function more when you get your defibrillator placed. Please trust your doctor to do what is good for you. It is not known what kind of work you do nor is it easy to predict how much longer you will like with the percentage of heart function (I am assuming that you are referring to Ejection Fraction) you currently have. I would consult a cardiologist to make sure that your functioning will come to baseline when you get the defibrillator inserted. I hope this helps. Take care and have a lovely day!
