Stuffy Nose With Cold, Tried Many Medicines, No Cure. What To Do For Congestion ?

I have had a very stuffy nose for about a week and a half. My doctor said it is a cold and there wasn t much I could do to treat it. It seems like no matter what I try - Sudafed , NyQuil , NetiPot , Halls lozenges, plug-in menthol pads, steamy shower, drinking lots of hot tea and water - nothing seems to clear my congestion. For days I couldn t smell anything, and over the past few days, I ve smelled a strange floral smell. I smell it both at home and at work. Any thoughts what this smell is or what to do for my congestion?

Hi and thanks for your query.
Flu symptoms are usually of viral origin and do not require antibiotics. However, after a flu, this could be a fertile ground for the breeding of bacteria and development of a bacterial infection.
In is certainly the case for you. You got a bacterial infection of the nasal pathways, that has also irritated the olfactory nerve endings, reason why you got difficulties with smell. The smell sensation is usually regained in about a week after the infection and irritation is cleared off.
Treatment involves nasal lavage with a saline solution and prescription of an appropriate broad spectrum antibiotic (Amoxicilline-Clavulinic acid could be appropriate). An analgesic can be associated if necessary.
consult your family physician for reevaluation and management.
Thanks and best regards,
Luchuo, MD.
