Hi,I am Dr. Alexander H. Sheppe (Psychiatrist). I will be looking into your question and guiding you through the process. Please write your question below.
Smokes Cigarettes And Marijuana, Inactive, Tired, Diagnosed COPD. Life Expectancy?
my sister is 60, she was diagnosed with COPD last year. She smokes about 35 cigarettes per day, and smokes marijuana daily. She rarely gets out of bed so really inactive...we go out for an hour and have to go home because she is too tired to continue. She is my twin and I am her caregiver. What do you think her life expectancy could be...she refuses to quit the smokes or the pot??? Please, I would like an honest answer. thank you

General & Family Physician, Dr. Praveen's Response
COPD is a chronic condition and life expectancy of such patients is not hampered to a great extent.Since your sister is a smoker and smoking exacerbates COPD symptoms she should be advised to quit gradually.Further marijuana has been found to reduce the level of exercise which was once tolerated by the same individual.Marijuana also causes problems like high heart rate, rise in blood pressure and other cardiovascular problems.I suggest you to approach a de-addiction center who will help her to gradually get rid of her habits.Encourage physical activity so that her quality of life shall improve since being bed ridden has its own inherent & independent risks. Its impossible to predict one's life expectancy with this history.I hope I have answered your question.I wish her a good health and speedy recovery.
