Skin On Upper Right Arm Numb, No Pain. Should I Be Concerned?

For the past two weeks the skin on my upper right arm (a touch left of where you d give someone a shot in the arm) is completely numb. I can feel touch but not pain, on the skin. BUT, if I press on the muscle beneath the skin that is numb, it has become more and more painful. If I squeeze my fist really, really hard, it doesn t produce the same pain that happens when I press on the area. Should I be concerned enough to go to my PCP? I sleep on that side every night and that arm is under my pillow, out straight so that both pillows rest on it AND my head rests on the two pillows so I ve prolonged seeing my Dr. because I ve thought maybe the weight of everything on that approx. area may have caused swelling or a pinched nerve ....but I thought if that was the case, it would get better, not worse day to day..... Thank you for your advice... C. Myers

Orthopaedic Surgeon, Joint Replacement 's  Response
Hi, thanks for writing to HCM.

Presence of numbness in the area of deltoid prominence of the arm indicates a neurological disturbance. The problem may be in the brachial plexus (network of nerves in the arm pit) or in the cervical spine.

An MRI scan of the cervical spine and Nerve conduction study of the involved limb will diagnose your condition.

I suggest you to consult a Neurophysicians for further evaluation and management.

Hope this information is helpful. Good day
