Should The Thyroid Be Removed Having Echogenic Mass In The Left Lobe?
Hi doctor
I am hypothyroid - right lobe 3.1 x 1.1 x 1.0cm; left lobe 3.6 x 1.8 x 2.2cm. There is a 2.4cm echogenic mass almost the entire left lobe. Should i be worried about cancer at this time? Should i have my thyroid removed. If so what kind of surgery is best recommended. How safe is cyberknife on your throat?
Hello, I read carefully your concern. To decide about the treatment of the thyroid nodules some other information is helpful. The characteristics of the nodule in ultrasound examinations are very important. Depending on them your treating physician will decide rather to do a cytology or not. The surgical intervention is recommended if the cytology result is malignant. The probability for a thyroid nodule to be malignant is 6%. If you have local symptoms due to compression of the adjacent structures by the nodule(cough, difficulty in swallowing ect) than surgery is recommended. Hope the information will help. Kind regards, Dr.Mirjeta
