Could Heterogeneous Appearance Of Thyroid Gland Be Due To Cancer?

My thyroid gland has a heterogeneous appearance. The right thyroid lobe measures 4.6x1.4x1.5 cm. the left thyroid lobe measures 4.7x1.4x1.5 cm. the thyroid isthmus measures approximately 0.4 cm in thickness. There is evidence of a 5.0 mm hypoechoic nodule in the mid pole of the right thyroid lobe as well as a small, 4.0 mm, cyst in the right thyroid lobe. My mother had thyroid cancer. What do you recommend for me to do?

General & Family Physician 's  Response
Dear, thanks for the question.

Your concerns are true. It can be cancer related as your mother had same problem. But still most common cause of heterogeneity in thyroid is multinodular goitre , which is not a cancer.

You need to under go thyroid profile (T3 T4, TSH levels). Based on that results you need to under go a biopsy of thyroid to rule out cancer.

I wish you a healthy living.
