Should The Pregnancy Term Be Completed?

Dear Dr. A friend of mine was prescribed to use the Mifeprin Kit as she was 48 days into the pregnancy. she had taken the pills as per the directions provided by the Pharmasist but unfortunately it turns out that it was unsuccessful. she had gone to 2 doctors to confirm if she was still pregnant and they confirmed same. she is now at a terrible state as she feels that this might have a negative impact on the child when she gives birth. she also has opted to have the baby after consulting her family. your advice is highly appreciated at this point of time

Hello and welcome,

The drugs in the kit are not meant to be consumed during pregnancy. They have demonstrated some harmful effects on the baby. So there is a chance that the baby may have abnormalities or may not grow well.

As of now there are a few option:
1. please see a doctor and determine the exact duration of pregnancy by ultrasound. If it is less than 12 weeks then a surgical abortion is possible.
2. If it is more than 12 weeks but less than 20 weeks then abortion can be done as per the law prevailing in your country. In India it is permitted till 20 weeks if fetal well being is jeopardized.
3. continue pregnancy and get a 4d ultrasound scan at 18-19 weeks to look for obvious fetal abnormalities and then decide about future course of action. But it cannot guarantee a normal baby.

So please discuss all this with her near ones as well as her doctor and then decide about it.

Regarding the psychological aspect, please counsel her. Many a times women come to our clinics to seek abortion and then we counsel them to continue if possible. Many change their minds and so are happy to have another baby. Please tell her that this is just like having any other baby and there is no need to have a feeling of guilt about it. After all it will be her baby and if it comes to this world it is because god meant it to come. So it is a blessed child and not an unwanted one.

Hope this satisfies your query.
