Hi,I am Dr. Prabhakar Koregol (Cardiologist). I will be looking into your question and guiding you through the process. Please write your question below.
Should I Be Concerned About Infection When The Leads Of The Pacemaker Breaks Through The Skin Which Is Exposed?
My father had his pacemaker replaced 6 months ago and they installed a biventrical pacemaker icd. 10 days ago the wires to one of the leads broke through the skin and is exposed about 1/2-inch. The skin is inflamed and he is very sore. His cardiologist who preformed the surgery was only able to connect on of the leads (the one that is protruding now) and had to have another surgeon install the other leads. The surgeon who completed the procedure has now sent my father to another doctor. In the meantime, I am VEinfecRY concerned about infection.
HI Thank for asking to HCM I really can understand your worry, this is a surgical problem if the infection part is there then that should be treated first, with other symptomatic drugs like NSAID I would treat your father in the same way if I would be his doctor, taking the infection under control or eradicating it would be first priority, if the pacemaker is the cause of his condition then you have to have words with the surgeon, with proper line of treatment this will come around and no need to worry about this, take care if your father, and have good day.
