Shock Like Pain From Palm To Middle Finger. C3 And C4 Fused. Is This Due To Nerve Damage?

My husband gets a shock like pain in the palm of his hand and it extends to the middle finger. This happens when he pushes himself up using the arms of a chair for instance or in bed to move positions. It does not hurt at rest. He recently had C3 and C4 fused (3 weeks ago) and is wondering if this has anything to do with nerve damage. However we are doubtful of that.

Orthopaedic Surgeon, Joint Replacement 's  Response
Hi and welcome to HCM
The pain you have described not likely to be due to nerve damage. These seems more due to temporary compression of nerve fibres due to muscle spasm. I suggest him to doing stretching exercises to relieve the spasm. Taking methylcobalamin supplements will be helpful.
Hope this will helps you. Take care.

Orthopaedic Surgeon, Joint Replacement Dr. K. Naga Ravi Prasad's  Response
Hi, thanks for writing to HCM.

Based on the description of symptoms, I am of the opinion that your husbands shock like sensation in the fingers could be due to compression of the median nerve at the level of the wrist joint in the carpal tunnel.

The nerves arising from C3 & C4 supply the area around the neck and shoulder region. So the present symptomatology has got no relationship with the cervical fusion. The fingers are supplied by C6 & C7 nerves.

Hope this information is helpful . Good day
