Sharp Burning Pain Under Rib Cage, Nausea After Eating, Feels Like Vomiting. Ulcer?

I have pretty bad pain under my rib cage in the middle upper abdomen, it feels like its a sharp burning pain. I am still eating and drinking but am feeling nauseous at times. I work out regularly but today while a work out I had to stop the pain was so bad and I felt like throwing up and felt like I was about to pass out. Is this an ulcer?

Hi, the area of the pain is called the epigastrium, the pain in this area, is due to peptic ulcer, alcohol, irritant foods, hepatitis, anxiety, or gallbladder problem, or gallstones.
I advise you to consult a gastro enterologist for diagnosis and treatment. You may need to have gastroscopy U.S. scanning for confirmation. Thank you.

General & Family Physician Dr. Chobufo Ditah's  Response
Hi and thank you so much for this query.

I am so sorry to hear about this pain. The description of your symptoms are suggestive of a probable upper gastro-intestinal problem. This could be a simple irritation like oesophagitis, gastritis or an ulcer like in the stomach or, oesophagus or the duodenum. A careful clinical exam would be able to pick some clues and make be follow up with and exam if need be. Whether simple irritation or an ulcer, treatment consists in giving drugs that neutralises the acid which is responsible for most of these conditions.

If the tests should suggest an infection of H. pylori at the origin of this, then you would most likely be prescribed some antibiotics.

Consult your primary physician. This is going to be a good starting point and any specialist referrals would be made from there on.

I hope this helps and I wish you well.
