Prescribed Isosorbide For Esophageal Spams, Periactin For Increasing Appetite. Is There Different Isosorbide DMs? It Increases Pulse Rate

Are there different Isosorbide DMs? My 89 yr old Mom has just been prescribed this
and does have esophogeal spasms but she is having rapid pulse rates, as much as 115 per min
after taking this as well as periactin for increasing appetite. I am concerned that she does not
need to take both at the same time. She is just out of 12 days in the hospital for a blood clot & infection
after having a knee replacement a month ago. Please advise. Thanks. Marcia

Internal Medicine Specialist 's  Response
Hi,
Thanks for using Healthcaremagic,
No these are same tablet which are used for angina and they are smooth muscle relaxants so is useful in esophageal spasm also.

The drug periactin that is cyproheptadine is more likely to cause palpitation and fast pulse rate.

It belongs to the group of antihistamine and anticholinergic and anti serotonin effects.

You should bring it to the notice of treating doctor and if necessary Periactin can be stopped and see if Isosorbide relives esophageal spasm.

If it is necessary to give there are many drugs which can control the heart rate.
You can always take a second opinion.

Hope this information helps.

Wish her good health.
Take care.
