Orthopaedic Surgeon, Joint Replacement 's  Response
Hello Mr Ganvir,

I wished you had also written what complains you have due to which you got a HLAB27 report done.

I will give you a brief idea of what all this is about, its slightly long but do read it !!

Most commonly since you went to a orthopaedic surgeon, you seem to be suffering from back pain/ joint pains/ early morning stiffness which wanes off with activity.

These are symptoms of Ankylosing spondylitis, a disease of spine, more common in males of young age have low back pain, back stiffness, cant bend forward, have morning stiffness, might have a brother with similar complains

This disease is of-course not completely curable, BUT, there are so many new medicines available which bring this disease under complete remission and prevent it from coming back.

Dont lose hope, Consult a rheumatologist, who can start the appropriate medicine and give you a symptom free life.

Other diseases which fall under this group "Seronegative Spondyloarthropathy" also have HLA b27 positive but they have different signs and symptoms.

So don't worry, you CAN be absolutely fine in the right hands!!

I hope this was some help to you

You can feel free to ask me further queries if you want,

Take care,

Regards

Dr Merchant

Orthopaedic Surgeon, Joint Replacement Dr. K. Naga Ravi Prasad's  Response
Hi, thanks for writing to HCM.

There is no permanent cure for Ankylosing spondylitis (AS) but treatment can decrease your pain and lessen your symptoms.

This condition majorly affects the spine and joints with few extra articular symptoms as well.

You can happily get married and this will not affect your family life.

The most commonly used analgesic medications in AS are Naprosyn and Indomethacin. Newer generation drugs, TNF blockers like etanercept, infliximab, adalimumab help in reducing pain, swelling and stiffness of the involved joints.

Physiotherapy also form an integral part of treatment for AS.

Hope this information is helpful. Good day
