Painful Knee. Diagnosed With Enchondroma, Tumor In Femur. Done CT Scan. What Treatment Should I Get?

Hi: I am having pain in my knee and a have had a ct scan. I was diagnoised with Enchondroma where the doctor said I have a tumor in my femur. Not only do I have a tumor but my whole leg swells up on the thigh area. My doctor can't understand why my whole thigh swells like that. The only thing he request that I have this tumor checked every six months to make sure it is not growing. I am worried about it becoming cancer. So if it should grow what type of procedure is done to take care of this. And what is the cause of this type of tumor/

Hi, thanks for writing to HCM.

Let me put some facts about ENCHONDROMA's infront of you
* These are BENIGN (not cancers) cartilage forming bone tumours that generally develops in small bones of hands and foot but may occur in any bone like femur, tibia and humerus.
* These are generally considered as ASYMPTOMATIC (do not produce pain) and indolent lesions. These are accidentally diagnosed when xrays are taken for some other causes.
* These generally grow upto the age of skeletal maturity and once skeletal maturity is attained, they cease to grow.
* In an adult, If a lesion is found growing or is causing pain, it strongly suggests the possibility of malignant transformation into chondrosarcoma.

SO IT IS VERY IMPORTANT TO ELIMINATE OTHER CAUSES FOR PAIN BEFORE ATTRIBUTING SYMPTOMS TO AN ENCHONDROMA.

Generally, enchondromas do not require surgical treatment.
Enchondromas can be treated with curettage and bone grafting to restore strength to bone.

Hope this information is more than sufficient for you. Good luck
