Pain in the chest while sitting. 38 year old. Should I be worried?

My chest begins to hurt almost every evening as I m sitting and watching TV or reading a book. I m 38 years old, and very healthy. I have no problem running significant distances and playing sports. When I stand up or lie down, the pain goes away after a few minutes - and I have no recurrence during the day, even though I sit at a desk...Should I be worried?

Hello and welcome to Healthcare Magic. Thanks for your query.

Chest pain which occurs only taking certain postures like sitting is most likely indicative of a non-cardiac cause. Moreover, you don't have any chest pain on exertion, and don't have any medical risk factors for a heart disease. So, you don't have to be worry about this much. It is most likely due to a muscular pain or due to a costo-chondritis (i.e. inflammation of the cartilage in the centre of the rib cage), which usually subsides on its own.

If you are having any associated symptoms such as palpitations, shortness of breath, dizziness or swelling of the ankles, then you should consult a doctor for a cardiac evaluation.

Best wishes,
Dr. Sheeba Stephen
