On Cabergoline For Prolactinemia. Had Duodenal Switch With Diarrhea. Suggested Investigation Of Octreotide. Connection?

I take cabergoline for prolactinemia. No one has ever seen an adenoma in numberous MRIs over more than 30 years. I had a duodenal switch a year ago and have had lots of diarrhea. An RN suggest I investigate Octreotide, which I noticed is sometimes prescribed for pituitary adenomas. Is there any connection? The cabergoline is not covered by my insurance. ReNae Christensen

Hi Renae,

Thanks for your query.

Hyperprolactinemia can also be due to Polycystic Ovarian Syndrome (PCOS). Since, MRIs-done several times- did not reveal any pituitary adenoma, it is suggested that an ultrasound of the ovaries and uterus should be done for excluding PCOS.

Octreotide is not indicated in cases of pituitary adenomas. However, bromocriptine is an alternative drug. If it is covered by your insurance, you can consult your doctor, who will switch over to bromocriptine.

Hope I have answered your query.
