On Lisinopril For High BP, Quit Alcohol, Sudden Dip In BP. Any Cause Of Alarm ?

I am on lisinopril for high blood pressure. i recently quit drinking alcohol after being an everyday drinker for some time. My recent blood pressure readings have been somewhere around 91/64. Is this too low or any cause for alarm and should i quit taking my medicine. I am away from home at this time and will be for another couple weeks and therefore cannot see my doctor right away. Thank you for your advice.

hi,
if you have stopped smoking and alcohol after being regular on medicine, then yes your blood pressure is low now, so you can decrease the dose or stop medications for while and see. it would be also better to know your earlier blood pressure to advice rightly.

wishing you good health.

General & Family Physician Dr. Pavan Kumar Gupta's  Response
Hello,
Regular and high amount of consumption of alcohol leads to high blood pressure levels and so when you stop the alcohol there is definitely reduction in blood pressure levels.
Moreover alcohol also lessens the anti hypertensive effect of blood pressure medications and so when alcohol is withdrawn, there is more pronounced effect of anti hypertensive medications.
Your blood pressure is definitely on the lower side and so you must reduce your dose of medicines slightly.
Keep a regular watch on your blood pressure and titrate the dose yourself, till your doctor is available.
Thanks
