On Levothyroxine, Plaquenil. Under Stress, On Half A Pill. When Stopped Have Palpitations, Irregular Pulse. Side Effect?

I began taking Levothyroxine about the same time I began Plaquenil about 4 1/2 years ago. Lots of high-stress going on with an elder parent who passed away about 1 1/2 ago. I have been weaning off Plaquenil to 1/2 a pill every other day for the past 6 months. About three weeks again, I stopped taking Plaquenil since I have had two great lab results. I noticed in the last 2-3 weeks that I am having rapid heat beats and irregular pulse everyone now and then throughout each day. the only medicines I am on is Levothyroxine .05. Could there be a connection?

I a so sorry to hear about the stress and the recent symptoms that you are experiencing. I hope we would be able to suggest solutions to your problems.

From the information you have provided, most of these symptoms are typical of levothyroxine toxicity or a cardiac problem. I will suggest that you get your laboratory follow ups for levothyroxine and see whether they are goo. This should be accompanied by an evaluation of the heart and more so if nothing abnormal is found with the TSH levels.

Plaquenil has no known drug interaction with thyroxine or has been known to cause such symptoms upon weaning. this is most likely a coincidence rather a cause-effect relationship.
