Need Treatment For Irregular Bowel Movements.

Hi. I'm healthy 39 year old female I've always had normal bowel movements going everyday or every 3 to 4 days. I do not take any meds. my diet has changed a bit over the holidays due to stress maybe with me eating just one big meal per day for maybe 4 or 5 days or so. then I ate at local restaurant and the very next day for 2 days I had diarrhea, severe stomach cramps, mucus in my stool and sometimes only mucus and I may have had a fever for a day or two, again this only lasted for 2 days. then no bowel movement at all for 7 days then small bowel movement. this has been going on now for nearly 3 weeks and now I have bowel movements but only every 4 maybe 5 days and they are
not really difficult to pass but still have small amount of mucus, and volume is small not like my normal amount. this is unusual for me but still I have no real stomach pain or discomfort other than having a lot of gas. thank you for your help

Hi,

There could be couple of possibilities including reduction of finer in diet, Hormonal imbalance, change of life style (reduction in exercise and increasing stressors). Although the duration is shorter for an absolute diagnosis of Irritable Bowel Syndrome (IBS) but it seems like you are probably heading towards that.

Do you have any family h/o colon cancer, autoimmune disorders affecting GI tract? Any changes in medications or activity levels? I would also suggest getting your thyroid level checked.

Hope I have answered your query. Please let us know if you need further assistance.

Regards,
Dr. Sadaf Mustafa
