Nausea, Diarrhoea After Taking Metformin. Diarrhoea Subsided. Nausea Usually After Eating After Medication. Normal?

Hi... I just took my first dose of metformin last night for high blood sugar. Dose 500mg extended release. I know nausea and diarrhea are common side effects of this medication and I did experience both last night about 2 hours after taking the medication with dinner. I felt better after a while. However, I had the nausea again this morning after eating. Is this normal? Will I always feel nausea after eating on this medication? Thanks for your help!

Dear Rebekah,

You are right, nausea, diarrhea , abdominal discomfort, flatulence are common side effects of Metformin.

No, you will not experience it foreever, your body will get adapt to the medication soon.

I have just 1 concern, since you have been started on metformin, you might be a diabetic. However, it is also used for numerous other conditions as well. But in case you are a diabetic, i expect that your kidney functions must have been evaluated by your doctor, to rule out diabetic nephropathy.

In case not, then get your Serum Creatinine checked. I am asking this because, Metformin may be a contraindication with deranged Kidney functions.

If every thing is normal, then you can happily continue with metformin. Your side effects will be suppressed soon.
