Is There Any Risk For Lithium And Depakote Tablets During Pregnancy?

A woman who is 11weeks pregnant learnt that she has bipolar affective disorder. She reveals the fact that for the past year, she has taken Lithium to threat this. However, when she learned she was pregnant, at 7weeks gestation, her psychiatrist switched her to Depakote (Valproic acid) and her bipolar disorder has been well. -What, if anything, are the risks to this woman's pregnancy?-Would the risk different if the woman switched medication at 4weeks gestation? How?- If she switched at 9 weeks gestation? How?-If she switched at 13 weeks gestation? How?- Are those risks any different if the woman was on Valproate until 7 weeks and then switched to Lithium?

hiiiii both of them have teratogenicity

particular depakote because it contains divalproate sodiun which produce neural tube defect in fetus
avoid during 1st trimester means 1st 3 month

lithium is little but safe but require proper care and guidance of your doctor at what dose it can be used

lithium sometimes produce ebstain anomaly of heart
in ist trimester avoid all this mood stabilizer and shift to only anti psychotic like olanzapine which has role in bipolar disorder

so better to consult doctor
thank u
