Is Reddish Thick Discharge From Ear Normal After Tube Placement Surgery?

My 9 month old son had tubes placed in his ear on 4/4/2011. He has had a runny nose the past 2 to 3 days that we associated with possible seasonal allergies. However, tonight he had some reddish mucus-y (looked a bit like strawberry jelly) drainage from his left ear. Is this normal post tube placement? We don t have a follow up appt. w/ the ENT scheduled until 4/26. Should we try to get in to see him earlier?

Internal Medicine Specialist 's  Response
Hello,

Reddish thick discharge from ear may be secondary to middle ear infection. Probably the secretions are getting drained through tubes. Use warm compression, use flucold drops to reduce congestion. If no improvement, please consult with your ENT specialist he will examine and treat you accordingly.

Take care. Hope I have answered your question. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Regards,
