Is Pregnancy Possible While On Depo Shot With Brown Spotting?

I have been on the depo shot for almost a year now. I spotted for 3 months straight and havent had a period for almost 2 months. My boyfriend and i recently had sex. About 2-3 days after i was spotting brown blood. Iv been having frequent headaches and lower back pain. My shoulders have been extremely achey (burning soreness)and have been waking up between 1-3 am every morning craving something to eat also. Last night i felt extremely nausious and my stomach was bloated. Iv heard from a couple people that they know people who have still gotten pregnant while on the depo shot. COULD I BE PREGNANT?

Hi,

Thanks for the query.
The chances of pregnancy after taking depot shots regularly and at proper schedule is extremely low.
The failure rate is extremely low but not zero. If 100 women use it for one year only 0.3% of them may become pregnant. Some of these women may have taken shots late or pregnancy may already in place before receiving the shot.

The best way to know if there is an accidental pregnancy is take a pregnancy test 3-4 weeks after the sexual act.

In your case, spotting is not related to pregnancy that has occurred from a sexual act only 2-3 days ago. Both of these do not seem to be related.
It is more likely that you may be having an infection leading to back pain, body ache etc. I suggest you see a gynecologist and have yourself evaluated for infection. If it has been over 3 weeks after the sexual act, get a urine test done to rule out pregnancy.

Hope this was helpful.

Thanks for using HCM, have a good day and feel free to ask any further queries.
