Is Loud Breathing In A Toddler Due To Adenoids Swelling?

Hello my son is 2 years old and snores in his sleep. He breathes through his mouth most of the time but when he breathes through his nose it is very loud and noisy. His breathing is sometimes irregular and I think he has brief moments of apnea. He does have swollen glands in his neck and when he wakes up from sleep he presses on his ear. Do you think he has swollen adenoids? Can adenoids be felt in the neck? Whats the next steps. Thanks

1. with a positive history of a mouth breather, snoring, sleep apnea, swollen glands in the neck: large and inflamed adenoids is the first possibility which has to be excluded, as such following should be the symptomwise approach:

i. check with an ENT doctor for any associated enlarged tonsils/pharyngitis and for bacteriological culture for "streptococcal throat"
ii. In kids, adenoids usually begin to shrink after about 5 years of age and often disappear by the teen years. [have a second opinion].

PS. The recent large study showed, through laboratory tests and follow-up examinations, that children who have their tonsils and adenoids removed suffer no loss whatsoever in their future immunity to disease, and since he is a kid thus may not be comfortable with Ayurveda Breathing and Yoga Techniques, please contact your Attending Physician regarding simple breathing exercises at his age.

iii. in the meantime Preventive aspect is provided

. Steam Inhalations 3-4 times a day.
. Warm salt water gargles. [gargle with honey water]
. avoidance of allergens [dust/cold drinks]
. mix 1 spoon ginger juice 1 spoon honey 1 pinch nutmeg powder and give it to eat for 1 month
. Give banana, black grapes, orange, spinach, ginger, tomatoes, diet rich in vitamin C (Citrus fruits) and vitamin E (sunflower seeds, almonds, apricots, peanuts) which are rich in antioxidants and thus helps in improvement of Thymus function (associated with Immunity.)
. Avoid Heavy, slimy and acidic food, curd, mustard oil, excess physical exertion, sunlight-dust areas, exposure to strong winds, day sleeping, smoking, Potato, green leafy vegetables. Cold water/food
. Give: Old brown rice, soup of moong dal, black grapes, cow’s or goat milk, garlic, lukewarm water to drink, black pepper, dried ginger, honey, mulethi, [licorice], launga[clove]

2. Since obstruction to breathing causes snoring and disturbed sleep patterns that lead to behavioral problems in children and also some orthodontists believe chronic mouth breathing from large adenoids causes malformations of the face and improper alignment of the teeth. [get dental checkup also] and may go for Adenoidectomy since blockage and sleep apnea may result in permanent adverse changes in facial or dental development...in addition to the adverse effects on growth and learning caused by chronic poor sleeping.
