Is Leakage From Breast A Symptom Of Menopause?

Hi, I had a mammogram in April and everything was fine. I am 50 years old and have noticed leakage on my bra. Can this be a symptom of menopause? Is there a cream I can use? My insurance was cut at the end of April that s why I made sure I got my Mammogram.

Hello,

The name for the symptom you describe is called galactorrhea where women can experience anywhere from clear to a white discharge from the nipple. Other discharges from the nipple can be green, yellow or red with frank blood. Any type of discharge from the nipple in the postmenopausal woman should always be evaluated. White discharge can be a sign of an imbalance in the prolactin hormone which can be cause by many things such as certain prescription drugs or a tumor in the brain. Green, yellow or red discharge may be signs of underlying pathology in the breast such as benign or malignant tumors/cysts. I strongly advise that you, at the minimum, see a generalist, but preferably a gynecologist to further evaluate your symptoms at this time.

Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Regards,
Dr. Amy Gueye,
