Is It To Be Concerned About The Nodules On The Thyroid?

I have a large nodule on each side of my thyroid and they are increasing in size. I did have a biopsy on one and it was benign. I ve been having a dry cough again to the point of gagging, problems swallowing, sweating for no reason with weight gain and my TSH levels are still coming back normal. I find it hard to fall asleep and when I m just about there I can feel something in my throat that feels like it s constricting it and causes coughing spasms again.....this has been on going for 2 years. What should I do ?

Endocrinologist 's  Response
Hi,
Welcome to HCM. I have gone through your question and understand your concerns.

Please upload the ultrasound and biopsy reports to answer your questions better. The decision we have to take is whether to do surgery and remove the thyroid or to follow up it. The indications of surgery include:

1. Size of the nodule more than 4 cm
2. Biopsy suggestive or suspicious of cancer
3. Nodule extending into the chest cage
4. Pressure symptoms - swallowing difficulty, breathing problems, hoarseness, cough etc

Here you are having pressure symptoms. So if it is trouble some you have to do thyroid surgery. Since TSH is normal now no medications are needed now. But after surgery you may have to be on thyroid hormone replacement.

Hope I have answered your query. If you have any further questions I will be happy to help
With warm regards,
Dr Ajish TP (MD,DM)
