Is It Safe To Take Lipitor At The Age Of 88 Having A Stroke?

Hello:

My 88 year old mother was told by her local Dr. that she should not be taking Lipitor after the age of 80 because it is ineffective. Strange because she was the one to prescribe this medication years ago. So two months ago she was taken off Lipitor and prescribed Metoproiol(tartrate), last week mom had a stroke and the specialist that treated her said she should not have been taken off Lipitor. She has diabetes and this will be her third stroke at five year intervals. Now she is concerned because her regular Dr. says the specialist is wrong and will not allow her to take the Lipitor. Is there a right or wrong answer?

Geriatrics Specialist 's  Response
Hi,
After going through the clinical history and the recent complications, I would say.. I agree with the specialist.
Lipitor is known to reduce lipid levels and hence reduce the complications of atherosclerosis.
It would have definitely reduced the risk of stroke.
Lipitor will help at all ages when lipid levels is high and increased lipid will always cause damage to blood vessels.
Any further queries, happy to help again
