Is Ear Pain Common Post Palliative Radiation Treatment?

My Dad has lung cancer and just completed palliative radiation treatment (chest only) one week ago. He is now experiencing an extremely sore throat along with sharp excruciating pains when swallowing. He expected the sore throat but not the ear pain. The doctor says that his ears look normal and doesn t have any solution other than pain killers. Any ideas?
