Is Bleeding In Nose Normal After Removing Adenoids?

My son had his tonsils and adenoids removed 10 days ago. Today he had a nosebleed for the first time in his life. He bleed about a handful (he held his hand under it as he ran from one side of the house to the other to get me). We had in stopped within a matter of minutes. But is this normal after surgery? Or is this something we need to call the on call doctor about.
