What Is The Black Hole In My Tonsil Bed After A Tonsillectomy?

Hi, I m eighteen years old and I got a tonsillectomy and adenoidectomy about 12 days ago. When I looked at my throat in the mirror, I noticed there s a hole about the size of a pencil eraser in my left tonsil bed. I can completely see through it to the back of my throat..Should I be concerned?

General Surgeon 's  Response
Hi,

Having noticed the whole in the tonsil bed after tonsillectomy 12 days ago indicates that the tonsil is covered with pillars and the whole is in the anterior or posterior pillar which you explained as you can see through. Practically, nothing to worry about if there are no symptoms.

You can consult your ENT surgeon to know the exact cause of what you see and discuss whether you need any treatment now or in future. If there are no symptoms there is nothing to be anxious about as you do not know the exact cause and only your Doctor can tell on an actual examination. So stop worrying. Have you foods as already advise. Take plenty of water orally to keep the area clean.

Take care. Hope I have answered your question. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Regards,
Dr. T. Chandrakant, General Surgeon
