Is A Smaller Does Of I131 Pill Advisable For Patients With Heavy Body Weight With Hyperthyroidism?

I have been diagnosed with hyperthyroidism with secondary Graves disease. I have been prescribed a I131 pill at 10 mci. I am only 85 lbs. I am worried with my size I will be more susceptible to adverse reaction, like thyroid storm, salivary gland issues, etc., etc. Would a smaller dose in my instance be in order

Endocrinologist 's  Response
Welcome and thank you for asking on HCM!
I can understand your concern regarding to the radioactive iodine treatment.
There are two different approaches regarding to the dose of the radioactive iodine in Graves' disease.
One is to give always a 10 mci capsule, the other is to calculate the dose in basis of the iodine uptake in scintiscan.
The body weight is not an indicator for higher doses.
The doses used to treat Graves' are small ones and side effects such as atrophy of the salivary glands are rare.
Hope the information will help.
Kind regards,
Dr.Mirjeta
