Infant With Swelling Above The Ear. No Injury. Reason?

7 month old baby has a small swelling above his right ear. No history of injury or trauma. The swelling cannot be noticed easily. And its like a soft spot. HE is behaving normally. Eating, sleeping etc. Consulted a doc who said not to worry, but I can t help worrying. What would have caused the swelling? Could there be anything wrong?

Pediatrician 's  Response
Hi Anitha,

Thank you for your query on Healthcare Magic.

The swelling may be due to a lymph node which usually present in that area.

As there is no other associated symptoms, nothing to worry.

Just observe for any change in size, color, appearance of pain.

If you find any skin infection in the scalp it may be related to this swelling as the lymph nodes will enlarge due to infection in its draining area.

If there is any bacterial skin infection in the scalp it should be treated with antibiotic cream application.

If find any change in the swelling , consult again your pediatrician for re examination.

Hope I have answered your query.

Regards.

Pediatrician Dr. Himanshi Kashyap's  Response
Hi,

The swelling above the Right ear is likely to be a lymph node .The lymph node swelling is caused due to scalp skin infection or viral infection.
If there is no pain and at present the scalp is fine you can relax and this swelling will disappear with time.
If there is pain and swelling is above 1cm then you might need to get it examined by his doctor.

Bye
Take care.
