If my heartbeat is normal, but i'm having unexplained chest pains? weakness, dizziness confusion, pain in my jaw, ribs, and chest. should i go to the e.r.? it started happening last week and it comes and goes throughout the day. I ve never been to the ER, i don t even know how they would determine how my heart is doing if it s beating fine and my blood pressure seems ok. no insurance, i m quite poor right now. so i m assuming I m SOL.

As a registered nurse working with cardiac surgery patients, I would recommend you go to the ER. It sounds like you may be experiencing angina (chest pain), that could be associated with a heart attack. They will do a 12-lead EKG to determine if there is any abnormal rhythm suggesting damage to the heart. They will also do some lab work to determine if you have any signs of heart damage. Your heartbeat can be normal in the early stages of a heart attack. The last thing you need is for the heartbeat to become abnormal - that can indicate damage, often permanent if you are indeed having a heart attack. Please do not wait! Call an ambulance if you can not find someone to take you.

Note: For further follow-up it is advisable to consult an emergency medicine specialist. Click here.
