Hi,I am Dr. Amitkumar Sharma (Internal Medicine Specialist). I will be looking into your question and guiding you through the process. Please write your question below.
I have been on equate s nighttime sleep aid (unisom), alteril and 10 ,g melatonin for years and am attempting to withdraw. Since these are over the counter what kind of time should I take for each increment to withdraw: Like cut one in half and take six weeks to get used to that before cutting the other one out and then cut another one in half and take another six weeks before I change again?
Hi, Thanks for posting in HCM. I understand your concern. Alteril contains natural substances that are shown to induce sleep and relaxation. The three primary ingredients in Alteril are L-Tryptophan, Melatonin and Valerian. It is used to aid in getting good, sound and restful sleep. Since it is non-addictive and non-habit forming medication, you can stop it anytime. It would be better not to stop abruptly and can taper the dose into half and stop it by taking it by taking reduced dose over few weeks. It would allow time for the normal activity of body to get adapted to. Hope the information provided helps. Best wishes. Regards, Dr.Ashakiran.S., MBBS., MD.
