How To Treat Loose Motion In A 1 Year Old Child?

Hello Sir, My 1 year 4 month old baby is having loose motions, 4-5 times a day for the last 1 week. He passes stool everytime he takes his meal or milk and sometimes in between also. What medication will suit him. Is 3 ml nor-metrogyl syrup 2 times a day ok? Loose motions could be due to teething or due to cold weather (no other symptoms of cold), not necessarily due to some infection. Please guide me.

Hello

Loose stool (not mixed with blood and mucus) in this age group is usually due to viral infection. There is no direct association between teething and loose stool. The main aim is to prevent dehydration by giving plenty of fluids(ORS).Antibiotics have a little role in viral diarrhea.
In many of the children there is transient lactose intolerance(inability to digest milk product) during loose stools. The amount of milk consumption should be reduced for few days if baby is not predominantly milk fed.
Zinc supplementation and probiotics help in early recovery from diarrhea.

Nor metrogyl contains combination of norfloxacin and metronidazole. The dosing is mainly based on norfloxacin. The doase of norfloxacin is 10- 15 mg/kg/day in two divided dosage.

I would suggest you to give plenty of fluids, along with probiotics and zinc. Be watchful for urine output and irritability/lethargy if you find any consult your physician immediately.
Regards
