Hi,I am Dr. Subhankar Chakraborty (Gastroenterologist). I will be looking into your question and guiding you through the process. Please write your question below.
How To Treat Intermittent Diarrhea And Constipation?
Doctor, Subject: Grandson has ongoing bouts of constipation since 8 mo old. He is now 3 years-10 months and still is being treated by taking a prescribed laxative and a special diet. He is still battling the issue though. Either severe bouts of diarrhea or constipation. He is all of 28 lbs and catches any visus or illness daycare dishes out. My Question is: Why won t his Physician test him and see what the real problem is instead of just treating the symptoms for so long. The child is under-weight, under-height and it s plain to see his body don t seem to be getting the nutrients it needs from what he does eat. He is ahead as for comprehension and skills for his age though.
As per my clinical evaluation, the child needs systemic evaluation with series of lab tests, ultrasound to find out the reason and treat in accordance with that.
There can be various issues for such presentation as
- altered gut flora mechanics
- GI motility related disorders
- problems with neuronal innervation of gut through Meissner and Myenteric plexuses
- food pattern related
- hereditary component of GI issues or enzyme deficiencies.
Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.
