How To Treat Heavy Bleeding During Pregnancy And Presence Of Kidney Stones?

I am 22 weeks pregnant and the doctor says I have kidney stones. I noticed blood in my urine about 10 days ago and went to the doctor to get it checked out. They made sure everything is ok with the baby and sent me home. The bleeding seems to be getting more frequent and now I'm having little blood clots. I am no longer feeling pain. Should I go back to my OB?

Hello, and I hope I can help you today.

If the blood is only in your urine, and you have a known kidney stone, you really do not need to seek further care unless you have pain or fever. Kidney stones are not dangerous, but they can cause blood in the urine and usually cause pain, supposedly as severe as labor pain. So the fact that you are pain free suggests that your stone may be scraping you a bit in your kidney, but it is not causing you harm or blocking the passage of urine.

Drinking as much water as you can will help flush your kidney so more of the blood will wash out. Also just double-check with your doctor that a urine sample was sent for culture to rule out a urinary tract infection, but that usually would cause pain as well, so I still think you do not need to worry and the bleeding should slow down with hydration and time.

I hope I was able to answer your question today and that my advice was helpful. Best wishes for the rest of the pregnancy, Dr. Brown
