When I get a head cold it usually takes me a couple of weeks to get over it. I only hear from my right ear and when I have A head cold my ear gets fluid behind the eardrum and I have severe hearing loss. I take sudafed but it does not always stop the fluid build up. I am A 70.5 year old male and have had this problem for years. The latest bout I have had is going on right now. The hearing loss is so bad that it is difficult to carry on conversations because I can hardly hear the people that I am talking too. Please help. Any help will be appreciated.

Hello

Welcome in H.C.M.

I have gone through your query regarding hearing loss due to collection of fluid behind your ear drum.

As you said that this is your recurrent problem and is due to cold. I would like to tell you that your ear disease is called as Secretory otitis media. This is basically caused by malfunctioning of eustachian tube. In most of the cases there are these possible conditions are associated -

1- Allergic Rhinitis with sinusitis.

2- Nasal polyps.

3- Nasal or nasopharyngeal mass.

4- Enlarged adenoids.

If any of above is incorporated with you than that should be treated to prevent recurrent infection of throat and blockade of eustachian tube. If you are free from above listed diseases than insertion of Grommet in your ear drum is the line of treatment.

Regards.
