How To Treat Fever, Extreme Flatulence And Bloating Due To Diverticulitis?
My mom (76 y/o) is three weeks into recovery from partial colectomy. Underlying disease was diverticulitis. Recovery was going slowly but she s been back on normal diet and is followed by a visiting R.N. Wound site is healing normally. However, she developed intermittant low grade fever (100F) about four days ago. Also has extreme flatulence and bloating. Today, she s seeing small amounts of blood in her stool. Her surgeon does not seem concerned at all but told her to go to the E/R if she hemorrages. ?? Do these sound like typical post-operative symptoms for partial colectomy? I m not a doc, but this seems like it might be pointing to infection or gastroenteritis or something like that.
The symptoms of your mother seem to be related to an infection. I recommend doing a complete blood count and a stool test to confirm the diagnosis.
Meanwhile, you can take an anti-inflammatory medication such as Ibuprofen three times a day for the fever. I also recommend you give her daily probiotics.
Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.
Take care
