Hi,I am Neethu Vipin (Dietitian & Nutritionist). I will be looking into your question and guiding you through the process. Please write your question below.
Hi, may I answer your health queries? Please type your query here...Hi I have been suffering with eosophigities and digestive problems for the past 7 months. I have been on ppi's and h2 blockers which made my weight rocket, I have now been put on Carafate which seems to help the reflux but the weight is still an issue. I have hypothyroidism and asthma also, but have never had a problem with weight gain until the digestive problems started. Could you please advise me on how to lose the excess weight as It's depressing not eating much and constantly putting weight on. P.s I recently had thyroid tested and it was actually on the hyper side????
Hyper side? Are you certain you know how to read your thyroid test? A high TSH means your thyroid is not working well. A low TSH generally indicates a healthier thyroid. I must ask if you are taking your medication correctly. Do you take your thyroid replacement on an empty stomach at least 1/2 hour before a meal? Do you consume soy? Soy may interfere with thyroid functioning in some people. Are you using iodized salt or obtaining adequate iodine as that is necessary for thyroid function.Proton Pump inhibitors are not generally known to cause wt gain so I am puzzled. You cannot lose wt. by not eating much, which by the way is very subjective. What is not eating much? Obviously too much for you unless you break this plateau. Despite the asthma, I would seek to keep it under control and initiate a regular exercise program starting out slow and increasing. Exercise will help you break the plateau. Start drinking green tea as that will increase your metabolic rate. Seeing a credentialed Nutritionist and having a complete food/medical assessment performed and getting some nutrition plans might help you get on the right nutritional track along with the exercise (approved by your doc). Respectfully, Kathryn Shattler, MS,RDN
