Hi,

The Herpes simplex viral infection has to be either confirmed or ruled out by doing a few investigations.

a. Tzanck test: Scrapings from the lesion are collected to detect giant cells and intranuclear inclusions by staining.
b. PCR: The virus, viral antigen or viral DNA can be detected using this molecular diagnostic test.

The treatment can be specifically initiated after any of these is done. A mere clinical diagnosis is not helpful.
