How To Confirm Urinary Tract Infection?

I was diagnosed with Stage III Triple Negative Advanced Metastatic Breast Cancer and had 16 lymph nodes removed. 9 had cancer. I finished Chemo December 2009, and radiation February 2010. That was all the treatment that is available for Triple Negative. Since then I have 6 more biopsies, all benign. Since December 2009, I have been on antibiotics to treat what we thought were urinary track or kidney infections. Finally after having all the symptoms of a those infections but not showing up as an infection on urine test, my oncologist sent me to a urologist. Urologist did bunches of tests and scans, including viewing internally (bladder) She found nothing, gave me some meds to help control symptoms, and left it as if it gets worse to call her back and we would take it back she would look further. Well, about 2 weeks ago it started again.....I started taking the meds which did include a low dose antibiotc for maintenance. Well it continues to get worse......called Urologist, she is out until after the holidays, Christmas Eve, I went to Emergency room. Well, no infection!! I am really hoping my cancer has not spread...........I don t believe in self diagnosis, but I have also learned over the last couple of years to listen to my body and to educate myself as much as possible. Can this have anything to do with my spleen?? It is exactly the same spot, my blood pressure was only 112/52 2 weeks ago before the symptom got overbearing (per my oncologist, she took it) I will be calling my oncologist and asking her these same questions...........but I can t help but wonder!! Thanks

Hello,

* Usual urine tract infection confirmation indicate colony count of bacteria over more than 1 lac number.
* The urine culture is the second most common tool for bacterial growth pattern and antibiotic sensitivity and resistance evaluation for particular medicines.
* The cystoscopy can give a superficial idea about the same, but microscopy advantages of lab data cannot be overcome by scope.
* The supportive evidence of fever clinically as well as total WBC counts in the blood with neutrophils indicate recent infection.

Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Take care

Regards,
Dr Bhagyesh V. Patel, General Surgeon
