How many days Septoplasty will take to recover after surgery ?

Hi, My age is 26 and weight 65 kg. Most of the time esnophil count in blood report is high for me. Doc. at Apollo and Ramakrishna Hospital, Bangalore has advised me septoplasty. I have nose blockage problem and because of continuous cold, fever , ear blockage, dandruff in hair have also developed. I live in AC city of India with pollution added to it, i.e., Bangalore. Would like to know, how many days it will take to recover after surgery and when can I join the work place back? Will I be not able to breathe through nose for some days after surgery? How can I know the components to which am I allergic to? Also, let me know the best experienced doctor and hospital in Bangalore under whose supervision this surgery can be done? Thanks.

ENT Specialist Dr. Sumit Bhatti's  Response
1. If your AEC (Absolute Eosinophil Count) is above 440, you will require a course of de-worming and Tab. Hetrazan 100 mg thrice a day for a week, besides anti0allergic medication.

2. Mild DNS is present in more than 60 to 80% of the population. Everyone does not require surgery. You must take a trial of two weeks with an anti-allergic, anti-leukotriene (such as Tab. Rid-AR or Rupanex-M once a day), a Steroid nasal spray (such as Rhinocort Aqua) once a day in each nostril and steam inhalation. If there is even 10% relief, continue this medication for a month the taper over two months.

3. If there is no relief at all, get a plain CT PNS (Para Nasal Sinuses) Scan done pre and post decongestion with Otrivin nasal drops.

4. A clear understanding of the nasal obstruction, nasal valves and air flow is essential before effective surgery. If your nasal obstruction is only due to turbinate hypertrophy, Radio Frequency Ablation of the turbinates is a much simpler procedure. Usually no post op nasal packing is required.

5. After septal surgery, the nose has to be packed for 48 hours. If you are uncomfortable, there are newer packaging materials with breathing tubes available.

6. Though you may resume normal activities within a week, internal healing may take upto 4 week or even months. You can expect nasal blockage, discharge , slight bleeding bleeding or clots in the healing period. Cleaning the nose regularly and (self) alkaline nasal douches (washes) speed up the healing process.

7. You may consult Dr Sunil Narayan Dutt @ New Apollo Hospitals, Bannerghatta Road, Bangalore, +91 99001 28981. If your nasal allergy is non specific (such as dust and pollution), avoidance is impossible, hence testing is not necessary.

Hi, I have an issue regarding septoplasty which I had in August 2013. I have a deviated septum and struggle with breathing through my nose. My left nostril appears to be fine however my right nostril not so much and is completely blocked which has resulted in me breathing only through my mouth for as long as I can remember. I am now 17 years old and even after having surgery, have seen no improvement in my breathing but rather much more pain and discomfort in my nose. Not only that, the appearance of my nose has gotten worse and is now crooked and leaning towards my left which I am incredibly self conscious about. As the days go on, my nose gets more and more crooked. Before septoplasty, I worried a lot about my appearance particularly my nose and I was told beforehand that septoplasty will not change the appearance of my nose. I decided that would be okay although I was hoping my dorsal hump would be removed in the process as it was my only concern about the overall appearance. Looking back now, I regret feeling conscious about my nose and would do anything in order to get the old appearance back. The bone at the bottom of my nose sticks out of my left nostril which is noticeable whereas before, my nose was straight but with a slight dorsal hump. My dorsal hump is also now even more noticeable and every morning I experience pain (I have to pinch my nose really hard in order to numb the pain) within the bump and the tip of my nose which I didn t have before the surgery. I feel this surgery has done nothing to benefit me. My GP did confirm that I will have to undergo another operation in order to open up my right nostril as not a lot of cartilage was removed but after taking blood tests, they found that I am allergic to house dust mite and mixed pollens in grass which has left me sniffling and with a cold for my entire life and so will not need another surgery. I have been told that there are tablets I can take which can help reduce my sniffling but the appearance of my nose is what I am not happy with. People point out my nose and why it is crooked as it is not normal and family and friends especially have noticed a huge difference about my appearance. This is not something I should be worried about at 17 years old and it has taken a toll on my everyday life and I am even afraid of leaving my house as I feel people are staring at my nose. I have before and after photographs which show the change in my nose. After speaking to my GP a few months ago, I was told he would be in touch soon in order to arrange a rhinoplasty but said nothing was guaranteed and that if he was me, he would get a rhinoplasty privately. I don’t understand why I should pay for the surgery if it was as a result of septoplasty even after being told my appearance would not change. My GP has not yet been in touch and I doubt he will unless I make another appointment and complain. I just wanted to know what I should do in the current position and the possibilities I have in order to fix my nose because my nose is only getting worse becoming more and more crooked by the day and I fear eventually the tip of my nose will practically be touching my cheek. Thank you for your time

Hallo. I had septoplasty operation two weeks ago. Everything went fine. It s the first time that I breathe like that. There s one complication though. There is a hole (30mm diameter) on my left mucosal layer deep inside. Only on theleft layer. The right one is ok. Is this going to heal? What are the risks of a permanent perforation? I use Bepanthol cream. Is there anything else I can do?? Thanks

I have just returned home after having septoplasty/rhinoplasty surgery. I am a 49 year old woman weighing 158 lbs in excellent health with no pre-surgery complications. My situation is that immediately upon awaking in the recovery area, I experienced burning and stinging in my nostrils, sore throat and pain in the chest. The sore throat and chest pain are the result of the breathing tube (it was a 4 hour surgery) and I was told by the nurse on duty that the nasal burning was due to the nasal sprays that were administered while I was under anesthesia. My question is, how long will it be before this burning subsides? This is actually the worst part of my experience thus far. I did have nasal packing performed which is being removed in two days - could the burning be related to this? I am currently taking Percocet for pain which is working well for the actual pain of the rhinoplasty, but it hardly touches the burning. Any advice would be greatly appreciated. Thank you.
