What Causes Foul Odor In The Nose After A Septoplasty Procedure?

Hi, I had a pituitary tumor removed last October and at the same time the ENT surgeon did a septoplasty for a (L) deviated septum. Just over the past two weeks I have noticed a bad odor in my nose. At first I thought that it was my hair. It is really bothering me. What is it and what can I do about it.

General Surgeon 's  Response
Hi,

The most common causes I can think about are:
- Sinusitis
- Rhinitis
- Altered sensation in nose due to whatsoever cause
- Any psychological problem can cause altered sensation

This can be diagnosed by the following:
- ENT endoscopy by an ENT surgeon
- Clinical evaluation
- Relevant investigations of blood
- CT and MRI of the nose, skull base to for any cause at the level of the sensory nerves of nose called as olfactory nerve
- Watch for any signs of infection

Once a proper cause is found it will be easy to get a specific treatment to get relief.

Take care. Hope I have answered your question. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Regards,
Dr. T. Chandrakant, General Surgeon
