What Does Dry Nose Indicate Post Sinus Surgery?

default
Posted on Thu, 2 Nov 2017
Question: I had sinus surgery three months ago (turbinate reduction and septoplasty.) my nose is now extremely dry no moisture whatsoever and I have trouble breathing at night (it feels like my nasal passages are too open and I can’t get enough pressure in my nose to get a full breath.) it feels like my nose is hollow now. I suffer with a constant sore throat and thick dry mucus in the back of my throat) I am getting very depressed and am scared I may have “empty nose syndrome”. Help!

Brief Answer:
Avoid steroid nasal spray...

Detailed Answer:
Hi

Thanks for writing back

This is one of the commonest problems faced post septoplasty. This is due to reduction in the mucosal bulk and reduction of the glands associated with the nasal mucosa.

The best remedy for this to use isotonic saline nasal spray as frequently as possible. You can try using saline nasal gel. Nasal gel prevents drying of the nose. Avoid steroid nasal spray and hypertonic saline spray. Both causes severe drying of the nose.

Drink frequent sips of lukewarm water. Eat plenty of fresh fruits and vegetables, this rejuvenates the mucosa and helps in healing faster. Avoid coffee, smoking, chilled food and beverages.

Hope this answers your query. I will be available for the follow up queries.
