How Long Are The Shingles Virus Contagious And Should People Living With The Infected Get Shots?

My husband has gotten shingles and I would like to know how long the virus is contagious. I am talking about the possibility of it being on the sheets, the bed, towels, clothing etc. My granddaughter is 10 and lives here also. Should I get the shot?

Hello,
Welcome to HCM,
Herpes zoster or shingles is characterised by a predominantly unilateral vesicular rashes within a nerve dermatome.
It is often associated with severe pain that may precede lesions by 48–72 hours. The rash lasts up to several weeks depending on severity.
It is usually communicable for one to two days (up to five days) before the onset of the rash, continuing until all the lesions are crusted. Communicability may be prolonged in patients with altered immunity.
The vaccine can be for non-immune healthy individuals aged 12 months or older.
It provides protection against infection in 70–90% of individuals.
Thank you.
