History Of Gastric Bypass Surgery. Surgery Shows Mass On Small Intestine. Swelling, No Drainage Visible

My daughter had gastric by pass surgery a few years ago...since then she has had many troubles with her bowels..severeral surgeries, last week while on vacation she had emergency surgery...which revealed a huge mass on her small intestine that had tentacles that were wrapping around her spine and aorta...it was removed more intestine with it..we traveled back to Ohio after surgery...while in route she started swelling...both feet both legs and genital region...she is now admitted to Riverside Hospiatl in Columbus Ohio where it was found that she had a 12 meter abcess on her ilis...a drain was inserted. As of this moment, she is still swelling, has had no drainage visable and still in pain....what do we do????

General Surgeon 's  Response
Hello!

Thank you for the query.

If the drains were inserted without surgery (through the skin), the abscess could not be reached by drains or the pus is too dense to be drained. So the next step is another abdominal CT or ultrasound and surgical abscess removal considered. The abscess may need more than one surgery to get rid of it completely. Also more effective antibiotic like Ertapenem should be given as well.

Hope this will help. Feel free to ask further questions.
Regards.
