Heart Is Jumping Periodically All Day Long. Blood Pressure Is Good. Problem?

I am a female 56 years old.
For the last two weeks my heart has been jumping periodically all day long. Far as I know I am in good health..I have taken my blood pressure and it is good. Last time I took it, it was 117/72. Is my heart jumping, something I should be concerned about, and also would my BP run in this neighborhood if there was something wrong with my heart?

General & Family Physician 's  Response
Hi, thanks for using health care magic

Abnormal heart rhythm, palpitations, can occur due to different causes.

In the normal heart beat a ' signal' is sent from a particular part of the heart. This signal travels along a specific pathway to stimulate the rest of the heart to beat.
Palpitations occur if: (1) there is increased or abnormal signaling from this point
(2) there is blockage along the normal pathway
(3) the 'signal' travels along another pathway
(4) another part of the heart is sending out a signal

These can occur in different settings such as anemia, thyroud disease, excess caffeine use, abnormal structure of the heart are only a few causes.

You should consider visiting your doctor for an assessment which may include blood tests and an ECG.

I hope this helps

Cardiologist Dr. Anantharamakrishnan's  Response
Hi friend,
Welcome to Health Care Magic
Pressure and rate are related – but not always / not in chronic situations...
The first step is to see a Cardiologist / Irregular heart beats need to be DOCUMENTED by ElectroCardioGram (EKG). / Standard ECG records the electrical activity of the heart, for a few seconds. It can detect the arrhythmia occurring during that time only. If the episode occurs randomly or precipitated by a specific activity like exercise, one needs Holter or event monitor.
Anaemia / Anxiety / Alcohol / Tobacco (smoking) / Caffeine (too much tea, coffee, cola) / Fever / Infection / Pain / Stress / Thyroid / Vitamin D, calcium, magnesium / Medicines like Phenylephrine used for ‘cold’; Salbutamol used for asthma and so on - may be responsible.... / At times, abnormal nerve paths in the heart (bypass tracts) or disease of the conduction system may be responsible!
ECHOcardiogram / TMT (Treadmill exercise ECG) / LABORATORY work-up – may all be necessary for further assessment and assistance. You may even need Electro Physiological Studies (EPS)
The treating doctor may suggest them depending on need, based on his assessment of the situation.

Take care
Wishing speedy recovery
God bless
Good luck
