Have Sciatica Pain And Low Back Arthritis. Prescribed Athrotec. Took Naproxen. Stopped Bimovo And Taking Advil. Side Effects?

I have sciatica pain, and low back athritis. My other doctor prescribed athrotec for my low back athritis but afraid of getting gastric ulcer as I took naproxen for many years and later had hernea in my esophagus. I am very careful of what I eat so I do not take tecta or prevacid continuously.. Now, I have sciatica according to my family doctor and he prescribed me Bimovo but again, after reading the side effects, I stopped it and now taking Advil. Should I start taking the Athrotec again for better pain reliever? I am travelling for a long haul to Europe on Wednesday and would like to start taking this Athrotec again? I am just worried taking in case I get side effects and I am outside the country. Please reply. I am typing this from my work and I am going home. I will read your reply at home... .

Hi
Thank you for your question to HCM.

Arthrotec (Diclofenac), Vimovo (Naproxen) and Advil (Ibuprofen) are all NSAIDS. This class of drugs are known to cause gastric irritation and even ulceration with prolonged use sooner or later.

Meloxicam is a selective blocker of pain that causes less gastric problems. I would also suggest trying tramadol if you are worried about gastritis since it is a different class of drug and free from this side effect. Taking any medication from NSAID group for a long duration will eventually cause gastric irritation or ulceration.

Hope this is helpful. I would be happy to answer any questions you may have.
