Hi,
Age per-se is not a contraindication for the surgery. However, the Diabetes, blood pressure and thyroid dysfunction should be well controlled to make the operative and post-operative phase problem free. Unfortunately, conditions like lumbar canal stenosis occur due to wear and tear of the joints of the back and therefore manifest as we age. I am sure your surgeon has considered alternative treatments including continuing with oral pain killers, epidural injection etc and has advised surgery as the option of last resort. Please do let me know if you have any more queries.
